As of 1 April 2011, judges will no longer be wearing their usual black robes!
In order to create a more child friendly atmosphere in court, the Lord Chief Justice of England of Wales will introduce the wearing of multicoloured polka dot print robes for all Judges involved in family law proceedings.
The Bar Council has also published guidance for advocates’ court dress. It states that they cannot wear dark clothing or barrister’s wigs and gowns however they may wear other wigs and capes in order to make their appearance more child friendly.
In addition to the change of clothing, courts will also be introducing colourful rugs and bean-bags.
